But because it is so at one with ourselves, we are often not aware of doing it. In fact, sometimes we breathe the wrong way. Though breathing, when done properly, can help ease the mind full of stress, reduce heart disease, allergies, and even lose weight!
When weight gain, often times we think the problem is only in the foods we eat. In fact, the possibility of what we think is also affected.
"The emotional stress can cause weight gain," says Dean Ornish MD, President of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, United States. "Stress that accelerates the conversion of calories into fat because you are more likely to overeat or choose unhealthy foods when stressed."
Therefore, control your stress first, then you can control your weight. The best way for that is to focus on slow breathing, which will help reduce stress hormones.
Another factor that causes weight gain is adjustable with respiratory heart rate variability (HRV), in which the time interval between heart beats varies. According to Kelly McGonigal, PhD, author of Yoga for Pain Relief, fluctuations that occur moment by moment can help determine how you should respond to stress.
"Studies show that people with heart rate varied more likely to have self-control, whereas those with a low heart rate variation is more likely to give in to temptation," he said. Temptation is none other than unhealthy food earlier.
Breathing tricks
Try to practice breathing slowly as this improves HRV and make you more aware of your actions. You will also be able to reduce levels of stress and control excessive eating, according to McGonigal.
How to do this breathing, inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, followed by exhale for 8 seconds through pursed lips (like blowing a straw).
Another way is to apply the method of breathing called ujjayi Hindu. Inhale through the nose for 6 seconds, then exhale through your mouth for 6 seconds as if you're trying to create fog on the mirror. Make a sound like "hahhhh ..." or lock pulling into the stomach.
In the next breath, try to make the same sound with your mouth closed. Her voice had such cochlea in the inner ear or cochlea, McGonigal said.
